Friday Harbor Sunshine Alley

The Town of Friday Harbor is interested in encouraging improvements and development within the historic Sunshine Alley, spurred by the success of the Ag Guild’s Brickworks building restoration and location of the weekly Farmers’ Market. Improvements are intended to be public, private, and public-private ventures.

The project team of Beckwith Consulting Group, HKP Architects and SvR Design Company facilitated interviews, community workshops, surveys, and charettes to determine what kinds of improvements Friday Harbor residents and business owners deemed most important to enhancing the feeling and activities in the alley and surrounding block. Using community input, the team developed conceptual imagery and cost estimates for a final Implementation Plan.

Improvements include: pedestrian routes and traffic calming, shared streets, renovation of existing buildings for more retail space, outdoor performance and eating areas, children’s play areas, gateways and wayfinding signage, solar arrays, art displays, murals and green walls. Improvements are intended to be made incrementally, over time as funding allows, creating an engaging and economically viable public space in the heart of Friday Harbor for residents and tourists alike.
