Touring the Library Commons

Since the opening of the Mount Vernon Library Commons (MVLC), HKP Architects has had the pleasure of providing tours to groups, organizations, and individuals eager to learn how this important piece of Mount Vernon's downtown came to be. Sharing facts and insights into the project's innovative and collaborative design has been a meaningful way to highlight the community's commitment to sustainable building practices.

Recently, HKP welcomed James Guerrero Architects, FORMA Construction, American Institute of Architects (AIA)'s Northwest Component, and guests from the Northwest Eco Builders Guild Home Tours for guided tours of the Commons. Our team led people through the library, public commons, and parking structure, explaining how unique concrete mixes, passive building strategies, the solar roof array, and carefully planned sight-lines were all thoughtfully integrated to ensure the building's long-term effectiveness and resilience.

Each group brought a different perspective, some focused on the building's internal infrastructure and energy systems, others on the flexible layout and gathering spaces, while many were particularly interested in the overall design and construction process that brought this vision to life.

The conversations sparked during these tours reflect the power of collaboration between architects and civic partners--and the role of sustainable, inclusive design in shaping vibrant, collective public spaces. HKP Architects is proud to share the story of the Mount Vernon Library Commons and to celebrate the dedication and creativity that made it possible.
