HKP designed a 6,000 SF addition to the existing Orcas Island Library building, which was designed by the firm originally in 1992. The addition effectively doubles the size of the library and provides for expansion of all existing collections, more space for computers, a Young Adults area, Quiet Reading and support spaces. Group meeting rooms are also provided and the North Reading Room is designed to be a future Large Community Room, available to citizens and visitors after hours.
In 2019, HKP was asked to help the library complete two minor projects that were alternates in the original project. This work included a lobby renovation and installing glazed partitions at the Children’s and Young Adult Rooms.

Winner, Merit Award, 2020 AIA Northwest
The jury was struck by the successful siting of the addition to create a new main entry and drive court for the library as well as interior spaces that provide for a range of loud to quiet environments in the new larger library. The existing library entry became the connection to the public meeting room that allows after-hours use. The design of the new reading room referencing the soaring ceiling and structure of the original is lovely and continues the expression of structure as well as the use of natural daylight. It is a graceful expansion that appears to have grown organically from the original.
