HKP worked with the Children’s Museum of Skagit County to design their new home in a local outlet mall. The design strategy involved phasing the project to mitigate closure time and impacts to the Museum’s operation and its many members during the relocation. In the summer of 2019, the museum opened to over 5,000 visitors.
The first phase included a Classroom (used for the museum’s Pre-School and other functions), Family Resource Center, Conference Room, Community Gathering Space, Staff Offices, Party Room, Gift Shop, Check-in Desk, Art Room, and Reading Room.
The second phase of the project involved the Museum’s main exhibition space. The majority of the existing exhibits were carefully re-imagined, relocated, and reconstructed in the new space including the Tug Boat, Crane, Farmer’s Market, River, Theater, Sandbox, Toddler Farm Yard, and Sand Topo Map. The Children’s Museum has also been gifted a new state-of-the-art Semi-Truck Cab, allowing for more exploration and interaction. New exhibits include a Train Station , as well as a Main Street that hosts a Bank, Dentist Office, Doctor’s Office, Design Studio, Grocery Store, and Construction Site.
Phase three included building out a Break Room and Restrooms for the Event and Large Motor Skills area, which is used by the Pre-School, museum visitors, and for rentals.
Accessibility and supervision are key priority design features, second only to providing opportunities for children to have fun, explore, learn, grow, and develop their motor skills. Memberships have increased 150% since the new museum opened, providing essential services for families throughout the region.
